PWCC Sets Record with Michael Jordan Card Sale

In the world of sports trading cards, Michael Jordan continues to reign supreme. PWCC Marketplace’s November Premier Auction witnessed yet another record-breaking sale, as a 1998 Skybox Premium Stars Rubies edition card featuring the basketball legend fetched an impressive six-figure sum.

This highly sought-after card, limited to just 50 copies, reached new heights with a final sale price of $216,000. Not only does this sale set a new record for the 1998 Skybox Premium Stars Rubies parallel card, but it also ranks as the second most expensive Star Rubies card ever sold. The allure of serial-numbered cards within the hobby has made this card series, along with Skybox’s Precious Metal Gems, a pivotal force in creating rarity.

The significance of the 1998 Skybox Premium Stars Rubies edition goes beyond its rarity. This particular set holds a special place in the hearts of collectors as it was the final Skybox release to showcase Michael Jordan before his 1998 retirement. With Jordan’s cards becoming increasingly valuable, this set has seen a surge in demand. The intricately designed foil details and edge-to-edge layout of the cards add to their allure and make them even rarer.

The record-setting Michael Jordan card, which received a PSA 7 grade, falls into the Pop 4 category. This means that only four cards of this specific type have received the same grade, with just five others graded higher. The combination of rarity, the iconic subject, and the card’s condition contributed to the exceptional sale price.

The November Premier Auction also featured other notable sales. Despite its less-than-perfect condition, a PSA 1 (MC) graded 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 card sold for an impressive $35,400. The historical significance and scarcity of this card propelled its value, proving that condition isn’t always the be-all and end-all for collectors.

Additionally, a record was set for a Kobe Bryant 1999 Upper Deck Game Jerseys patch auto card, which sold for $32,700. Kobe Bryant’s legacy as one of the all-time basketball greats continues to captivate collectors, and this rare autographed patch card exemplifies his enduring popularity.

The auction also witnessed a high sale price for a 2020 Topps Dynasty F1 card featuring the dynamic duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. This card, which showcases a piece of race-worn memorabilia from the Formula 1 drivers, garnered a notable $20,400. The intersection of sports and trading cards expanded into the realm of motorsports with this impressive sale.

PWCC Marketplace’s November Premier Auction proved once again that sports trading cards remain a hot commodity, with Michael Jordan leading the charge. The record-setting sale of the 1998 Skybox Premium Stars Rubies card, along with other notable sales, further solidifies the collector’s market as a thriving and exciting industry for enthusiasts worldwide.
