Panini Prizm’s originate from Topps Refractors, first introduced by 1993-94 Topps Finest Basketball set, which add a nice holographic effect to the regular chromium cards. Ever since, year after year Topps has introduced a refractor parallel of their cards which feature a chrome face. In 1996, Topps expanded the finest chromium to a new set, Topps Chrome which is still the most popular set of the 90’s, and if they still had the proper licensing today, we imagine would still rule the card world. Topps also uses this feature on its bowman branded sets, which have ruled the baseball world since day 1. They expanded the refractor line up by including parallels of the refractors with different colors, such as red, orange, purple, and gold, all with a low number printing labeled on the card, gold normally carries a 10 print count, making them one of the most collectible cards in the industry.
Panini introduces their own chromium set, titled Prizm, which they name their version of refractor, also the Prizm, they have also introduced a plethora of colors, including the highly popular silver, gold, red, orange, purple, red white and blue, green, cracked ice, green pulsar, gold disco, red wave, blue wave, an abundance of variations which are highly popular among collectors. Prizm originally retailed back in 2012-13 with its basketball set, and wasn’t very popular at first and boxes had a MSRP of around $130.00, now Prizm hobby boxes retail for upwards of $2000, and jump up in value immensely within the first week or two, depending on the rookie class.
